I grew up in Chicago’s south suburbs and
began playing drums at the age of 16. My inspiration was, of course, Neil Peart of Rush.
I’ve been in a few bands before Frayd. The
band I was in before Frayd was a fast, heavy, aggressive type of band
called Incision and it never went anywhere. The mindset this band and the
others had was the faster the better.
That was fine for that kind of music, but
after hooking up with Eric & Sheree Fray, that whole idea changed for me
in a huge and positive way.
I found it harder to play slower and
steady. With Eric & Sheree, I thought this would be easy but I was wrong.
They both challenge me everytime we practice. Eric’s voice and Sheree’s
guitar playing was like nothing I’ve ever heard or seen before.
Their idea of playing "heavy" was to play
slower with a steady groove. They say "less is more" and this idea has
been a challenge. Sometimes fast works for certain ideas, but putting
myself in a slower mode has molded me into a better drummer.
My best friend was a drummer for Sheree &
Eric back in the days when their band was called Iron Tears. I had gone to
one of their shows at the Riviera in Chicago and was blown away.
They showed me that you can play slower and
still be heavy.
With the heavier bands I’ve been in, the
songs are over in no time flat. With Frayd, you can hear and more
importantly, understand all that is going on.
Frayd has definitely made me a better
player.
